What is Breathing London?

Breathing London is a London-wide project initiated by RPS London Region, the aim of which is to capture on camera the diversity of London’s green and open spaces – the ‘lungs’ of the City over the course of a year.

Do I need to be a member of the RPS (Royal Photography Society)?

No, you don’t have to be a member of the RPS:  anyone can  join the Breathing London project.

How much does it cost?

The fee to join up is £10.00 for RPS Members, £15.00 for Non-Members

(see the link here, to join)

What equipment do I need?

You don’t need any special equipment for this project. Any device which captures images, including phones and tablets, will do.

What's In and What's Not?

Images can be taken in any publicly accessible space: parks, heaths, woodlands, nature reserves, rivers, canals and more in any of London’s 32 Boroughs an the City of London are In. They can capture landscapes, cityscapes, nature, people enjoying and working in the open spaces and, in fact, any items that capture your attention – the more unusual and entertaining, the better!.  Private gardens, unless part of an official scheme such as the London Open Gardens scheme, are not.

What pictures should I post to the website?

The name of the game is diversity – diversity of images, of places and of approaches by different photographers (style, genre etc).  More than one image taken at the same place by an individual must differ in category or season so that we really see a cross-section of images. For example, you may have a Spring and Summer Landscape photo from the same place, as well as people enjoying that particular place – but if you have five pictures of swans on the pond in Spring, please choose your best one.  So when you join the website and start uploading images, please select your best shots, as you would for an Exhibition or Competition for example – and just the one for each place and category!

What happens to my Photos once they are uploaded?

Your pictures will form part of the Breathing London Portfolio and will become part of the project record.  They may be used in Exhibitions, Articles etc. and the terms of use are set out below under section entitled Copyright and Reproduction Terms and Conditions.

How do I submit one of my Photos for a Competition entry?

When you upload your photo to the website database, you will be given the option to select a category labelled “Competition (Month)”.  By checking this box you will have automatically entered.  Remember, one picture per author per competition only, please!  (You can do this later, via the “Edit” function)
