… the Downhills Shelter tragedy. On 19 November 1940 a high explosive German bomb made a direct hit on a public air-raid shelter, close to this spot, with 300 people inside. The death toll was in the 100s although official records report 41 killed and 100 injured. This was the highest death-toll in Tottenham during the whole of the war.
The names and ages of those known to have died are recorded on the plaque.
